The Johnson family has battled many hardships in the past, and being displaced due to a house fire is just the latest event for this family to overcome. In a meeting hosted by First Baptist Church of Perryton on 1/2/09 it appears as though there may be some hope for this family. The meeting was an organizational meeting discussing options of how best to help this family. It was decided that this endeavor will require community involvement as well as assistance from Christ’s Hands and Feet Ministry. [continued] | New Law - Fire "Safe" Cigarettes Julie Corbin-Hulsey 02.JAN.09 Laws mandating stores only sell cigarettes that are slow-burning and fire-safe went into effect in five states on 01-01-09.
Delaware, Iowa, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and Texas on Thursday joined 17 other states in mandating the fire-safe cigarettes. Fifteen other states have laws that will take effect this year or next, according to the Coalition for Fire-Safe Cigarettes.
The paper on these "fire-safe" cigarettes is thicker in two separate spots so they will go out if not puffed when they burn to these areas. The idea is to prevent fires caused when cigarettes are left unattended.
Critics say that the fire-safe brands have a "different" taste, and can extinguish a cigarette before a smoker is done smoking it.
"This cigarette is supposed to snuff out before it can cause enough heat to start a flame" according to Oklahoma Fire Marshal Robert Doke.
According to the coalition, states that already had implemented fire-safe cigarette laws are New York, Vermont, California, Oregon, New Hampshire, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, Kentucky, Montana, New Jersey, Connecticut, Maryland, Utah, Alaska, Rhode Island and Minnesota, as well as the District of Columbia.
Other states soon to be affected by the ban include Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Colorado, Arizona, Washington, Louisiana, Hawaii and Wisconsin have laws that take effect this year, according to the coalition's Web site. Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and South Carolina. These laws will take effect in 2010.
Some states such as Texas are giving retailers a grace period to sell off their old inventory. Area Resident Dies on December 26th - Investigation Not Yet Completed Julie Corbin-Hulsey 02.JAN.09

 | | The women and children of Mission Messiah | Julie Corbin-Hulsey 02.JAN.09 Mission Messiah residents were recently treated to Christmas blessings provided by members of LifeGate Fellowship Church and some local merchants. Gifts were provided to the women currently in Mission Messiah who did not have children with them.
It may sound strange to choose to buy only for women without children, but after speaking with Shelly Kirkmeyer of Mission Messiah during a recent Perryton visit by she and Lisa Scott, Shelly explained that area churches in Midland and Odessa provide abundantly for the women with children by providing for both the mothers and their children. But the women that either do not have custody of their children – or do not have children received little during the Christmas season. It was after this that Perryton Panhandle MAMas decided to take on the mission of collecting Christmas for these women. [continued] | Crime of the Week
